IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alonzo "Bo" Sheldon
Westbrook, III
September 22, 1939 – February 15, 2026
Alonzo "Bo" Sheldon Westbrook, III, born on September 22, 1939, in Jackson, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, in Cookeville, Tennessee. He leaves behind a legacy marked by a profound dedication to service, engineering, and family.
Bo embarked on a distinguished career that spanned over 24 years in the United States Military. Starting with the United States Marine Corps Reserve in September 1956, he served as a Fire Mission Control Technician in the 2nd 105mm Howitzer Battery, reaching the rank of Private First Class. Following his graduation from high school, Bo earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering at Mississippi State University, which facilitated his transfer to Flint, Michigan. There, he rose to the rank of Corporal within the "D" Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, transitioning to roles that included a rifleman and eventually becoming a Senior Drill Instructor. His military journey continued as he trained as a helicopter engine mechanic at Grosse Ile, Michigan, working on S-34 and P-34 helicopters until June 1965.
After relocating to Tennessee, Bo continued his service by enlisting with the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1985. As a Sergeant in the Headquarters Company of the 194th Engineer Brigade, he dedicated another 15 years of his life, culminating in his retirement as Master Sergeant at the mandatory retirement age of 60 in 2000. Across all his military experiences, Bo showcased an unwavering commitment to his country and exemplified leadership and dedication.
In addition to his military service, Bo was a respected professional mechanical engineer, contributing his expertise at a Tennessee architect and engineering office. His work was matched by his passion for engineering and reading, as he could engage in discussions for hours about how things worked. Bo had a special fondness for literature, particularly his collection of Tom Clancy books.
His proudest accomplishments not only included his military and engineering careers but also his literary achievements as a published author in Power Magazine with his three featured "Maraduke Surfaceblow" stories.
Bo is survived by his loving family, including his sons: Alonzo Sheldon (Pamela) Westbrook, IV of Celina, Tennessee; Tate (Ashley) Westbrook of Maryland; and Walker Westbrook of Nashville, Tennessee. His daughter: Elizabeth Westbrook of Washington, DC. He is also survived by his sisters, Sarah Lynn Westbrook and Leslie Margariette (Palio) Westbrook Friegero, both of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Bo cherished his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren, Austin Westbrook of Celina, Tennessee, and Holly Westbrook, Kate Westbrook, and Thomas Westbrook, all of Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alonzo Sheldon Westbrook II, and his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Ruth Tate Westbrook.
Alonzo "Bo" Sheldon Westbrook, III will be remembered for his dedication to service, his passion for learning, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His contributions to both his country and his community leave an indelible mark on all who knew him.
The Westbrook family has chosen cremation with a memorial service at a later date.
